It is generally believed that the Chinese invented Fireworks
around the year 800 by filling up bamboo shoots with gunpowder and
exploding them. They believed the loud bangs would scare away evil
spirits.
The biggest manufacturers of Fireworks are the Chinese, and
virtually every firework is still made by hand.
The big day for Fireworks in the U.K. is November 5th, to
celebrate Guy Fawkes failed attempt to blow up Parliament.
In the U.S.A. the big Fireworks day is the 4th July, to celebrate
the Declaration of Independance.
In France, the big Fireworks day is Bastille Day on July 14th, to
celebrate the French Revolution of 1789.
Canadians celebrate Canada Day on July 1st with big Fireworks
displays.
Fireworks are used around the World to see in the New Year.
The largest, and first, big display of the New Year is in Sydney
Harbour, Australia. The display is watched by over 1 million people.
Sparklers reach a temperature of about 2000°C - 20 times the
boiling point of water.
Rockets travel into the sky at about 150 miles per hour.
In Mexico, the tall towers decorated with fireworks which are
built for fiestas are called castillos.
In 1996, a string of firecrackers was lit that lasted 22 hours for
the Chinese New Year in Hong Kong.
